Shelving above a child's bed is a good idea until a clock or a hardback works its way to the edge in the night.

Every one of the four cubes here has a string fitted across the front by the manufacturer. Things can be lifted out from above but cannot slide out on their own, which is the difference between storage above a bed and a hazard above a bed.

Eighty two by forty one by seventy two

That is the floor and the ceiling of this bed. Seventy two inches at the roof ridge is the figure to check first, because a house bed puts its tallest point in the middle of the room rather than against the wall. Under a sloping ceiling that is the number that decides it.

Seventeen inch guardrails

The rails run the length of the open side with a gap to climb through. At seventeen inches they stand well above a six inch mattress, which is the whole reason the mattress limit is published rather than left open.
