Wooden sandbox options at a glance
Types of wooden sandbox in this collection
Four groups make up the range, sorted from largest to smallest.
Sandboxes with cover and seats
Wooden sandboxes with a cover are the largest group in this range. The cover helps keep leaves, rain and animals out between play sessions. Many have built-in seats along the sides, and some add a bottom liner. A bench or lid that folds open gives children a place to sit while they dig.
Sandboxes with canopy
Canopy sandboxes add a fabric shade over the play area. Some have an adjustable canopy and a convertible bench. One includes a foldable picnic table with bench seats. The shade helps with sun on hot days, so these suit open yards with little tree cover.
Themed and feature sandboxes
Themed sandboxes turn digging into pretend play. Options include a pirate ship sandbox with storage. A castle-style box has flags, and another adds a toy digger and rotating seat. Pair one with pretend play for more imaginative play, or browse toy playsets for playhouses.
Sand and water tables
A sand and water table gives two play zones in one wooden frame. It has dual boxes and a waterway track for sensory play. This type suits small decks and patios. It also works well for younger children.

How do you choose a kids sandbox?
Match the size to the yard
A box about 4 ft (1.2 m) square suits one or two young children. A larger 6 ft (1.8 m) box suits groups. Leave at least 1 m (3 ft) of clear space around it.
Check the cover and liner
A snug cover keeps out leaves and animals. A bottom liner lets rain drain while it keeps soil out of the sand. Both save cleaning time.
Think about shade
Place a sandbox in part shade, or choose a canopy style. Sand gets hot in full sun, so shade also keeps play comfortable.
Plan the sand
Use bagged play sand. Take a 4 ft (1.2 m) box and fill it 6 in (15 cm) deep. That needs about 15 bags of 50 lb (23 kg). Sand is sold separately.
Where do wooden sandboxes work best?
Open backyards suit canopy sandboxes or large boxes with built-in seats. The shade and benches help several children play at once. Add kids outdoor furniture nearby so adults have a spot to sit and watch. Keep the sandbox in view of a window or deck.
Small decks, patios and townhouse yards suit a sand and water table or a compact box with a cover. These save space and tuck away when not in use. A level surface matters more than size, so check the spot first.
Large gardens with other play gear suit themed sandboxes. A pirate ship or castle box fits well beside swing sets. Together they give children a full outdoor play area.
How do you set up and care for a sandbox?
A sandbox lasts longer with level ground, a liner and a cover. Assemble it fully, lay the liner flat, then add play sand. Close the cover after each use and rake the sand weekly. Check the wood and screws each spring, and replace the sand if it becomes damp, dirty or smelly.

Kids sandbox FAQs
What kind of sand should I use in a kids sandbox?
Use bagged play sand that is labelled for children. It is clean, washed and free of large stones. Avoid construction sand and sand from the beach or yard. Sand is not included with the sandbox, so buy it separately before you open the box.
What age is a sandbox for?
Most wooden sandboxes in this range are listed for ages 3 to 8. Each product page gives the exact range. Younger children can use a sandbox with supervision. Always check small parts and the manufacturer's age advice before play.
How many bags of sand does a sandbox need?
A 4 ft (1.2 m) square box needs about 15 bags of 50 lb (23 kg). That fills it 6 in (15 cm) deep. Larger boxes need more. Measure length, width and depth, then add a little extra, since sand settles over time.
Should a sandbox be in sun or shade?
Part shade is best. Full sun makes sand hot and can fade the wood, while deep shade keeps sand damp. A canopy sandbox lets you shade the play area in an open yard. Pick level ground that drains well after rain.
Do I need a cover on a sandbox?
Yes, a cover is worth having. It keeps out leaves, rain and animals, which keeps the sand cleaner. Close it after every play session. Choose a cover or lid that is easy for adults to lift and safe for small fingers.
