Is 8,000 BTU the number that matters?

Not for sizing. The seasonally adjusted SACC rating is 5,000 BTU, and 250 sq ft is the coverage matched to it. ASHRAE numbers are taken under fixed lab conditions and Danby notes they run higher than SACC for the same machine.

How much water does it collect?

Dry mode is rated at 46 pints a day, but what you actually see depends on the humidity in the room. Fit the 3.3 ft drain hose to the drain port and it runs away by itself rather than filling anything you have to empty.

Can it cool two rooms at once?

No. It is rated for one room of about 250 sq ft. Cooled air does not travel far through a doorway, and the exhaust hose has to stay at the window.

Does the window kit work on a casement window?

No. It is sized for sliding windows between 25 and 47 inches. Crank out casement windows need a panel cut to the exact opening, because a sliding kit leaks when it is forced into that frame.
