Real cane furniture takes up rain, swells and dries out again. After a couple of freeze and thaw cycles the strands go brittle and start to crack, usually at the front edge of the seat where the weight goes.

This is PE rattan hand woven over a heavy duty metal frame. The strands do not absorb water and are not bothered by a freeze, and the frame underneath is what carries the printed 400 lb rating.

The three pieces

Two rocking chairs and a 20 in square table with a tempered glass top. Each chair carries three separate black cushions, and the table has a woven shelf below the glass. That is the complete set.

On a covered porch

Set out under cover on decking with a railing behind. This is where a rocker with stoppers earns its place: on a raised deck an unchecked rock travels backwards, and here it does not. The table sits between the two chairs in easy reach.

Weave, arm and frame

Anti tipping stoppers limit how far back the chair goes, and anti slip rubber mats keep the runners from skating on a smooth deck.

Each rocker is printed at 400 lb and the table at 100 lb. The frame under the weave is heavy duty metal, not a plastic shell.

A 2.5 in seat pad, a 2 in back cushion and a separate 17 in lumbar pillow. All three come off, and the covers unzip.

The 20 in table has a tempered glass top held by four suction cups, with a woven shelf underneath for a book or a tray.

The arms sweep round rather than running square, which is what makes a wicker chair bearable for an hour rather than ten minutes.

Is this PE rattan or real cane?

PE rattan, woven by hand over a metal frame. Natural cane absorbs water, swells and goes brittle after repeated wetting and drying, which is why almost nothing sold for a Canadian patio is made from it. PE rattan does not absorb water and is unaffected by freezing.

What is the seat height?

Sixteen inches from the ground before the 2.5 in cushion goes on. That is a little lower than a dining chair and about right for a porch, where you want to lean back rather than sit up.

Can the set stay out over a Canadian winter?

The frame and the weave will take it. Canadian patio guidance puts PE rattan over metal in the leave-it-out group, with a cover to keep it looking newer. Cushions are the part that suffers, so get them dry and bring them in. Glass tops are best kept clear of an eave where ice can drop on them.

Is the glass table safe outdoors?

The top is tempered glass, the safety grade. Outdoors the real risk is impact rather than cold: ice sliding off a roof edge, a falling branch, or something dropped on a corner. Keeping it out from under an eave and covered over winter is the sensible precaution.
