The louvre pushes air out and across, and the room does the rest. Air flow is rated 171 CFM, matched by the maker to about 250 sq ft. Open plan space or a room with a tall ceiling will feel the difference, so aim it at where people sit.

Set it once and leave it

The glass panel sits flat on the top, which keeps it clear of curtains and easy to read looking down. Mode, fan speed, temperature and timer are all there. A remote does the same job from a chair when you would rather not get up.

The port you will use most

The drain port on the back takes the supplied 2.1 ft hose so condensate leaves on its own. How much shows up depends on the weather: dry air produces almost none, sticky August air produces steadily, which is why the port exists at all.

What is the difference between the 8,000 and 5,000 BTU figures?

Two test methods, one machine. ASHRAE measures capacity under fixed lab conditions. SACC is the newer seasonally adjusted rating, and Danby notes it comes out lower for any given unit because it accounts for real season temperature and humidity swings. Use 5,000 BTU when you are matching the unit to a room.

Can I leave the hose venting into the room?

No. The hose carries the heat the compressor has removed, plus the heat the compressor itself makes. Vent it indoors and the room gets warmer, not cooler. It has to reach an opening to the outside.

Will it fit a crank out window?

Not with the kit supplied. That kit is sized for sliding windows from 25.5 to 47 inches. Casement and crank out windows need a panel made to the exact opening, because a generic sliding kit cannot seal against that frame.

How noisy is it?

The manufacturer rates it at 54 dB or under. For reference, ordinary conversation sits around 60 dB, so it is audible but not intrusive. Running it on low fan speed at night brings it down further.
