Why you may never see the water

A self-evaporating system sends most of the condensate back over the hot coil, where it leaves as vapour through the exhaust hose. Automatic defrost clears the coil if ice forms on a cool humid morning. Between them, there is far less to do than people expect.

What the air passes through

Air is drawn in through a high density filter screen before it reaches the coil, which keeps dust and hair out of the machine as well as out of the room. The filter is removable so it can be rinsed, and the castors and handle let you take it to a tap.

Does self-evaporating mean it never needs draining?

Not quite. In dry or moderate conditions most of the condensate leaves as vapour through the exhaust hose and you may never touch it. In very humid weather more water collects than the system can evaporate, which is what the drain pipe is for.

What does automatic defrost do?

On a cool, humid day the evaporator coil can ice up, which strangles air flow. The defrost cycle pauses cooling and melts the ice off before it builds. You do not have to do anything.

How loud is it?

The manufacturer rates it at 65 dB or under at full tilt, which is around the level of normal conversation. On low fan speed and in sleep mode it is noticeably quieter.

Can it cool the whole apartment?

No. The rated coverage is 230 sq ft, which is one room. Cool air does not carry far through a doorway and the exhaust hose keeps the unit tied to a window.
