A grouped display of trees usually means finding floor space for three separate stands, each a couple of feet across, which is more room than most halls or living rooms have going spare in December.

Each of these is one foot wide on a bucket between 6.5 and 7 inches across. Three of them lined up take less floor than a single conventional five foot tree, which is what makes a layered group possible in an ordinary room.

Three, four and five feet

Each tree is a foot across, whatever its height. The buckets differ: the smallest is 7 inches across and 7.5 inches high, the two taller ones 6.5 inches across and 9.5 inches high. Staggered heights are what make the group read as a stand of trees.

120, 140 and 160 flocked tips

The tip counts rise with the height, 420 across the set. The flocking is heavy rather than dusted, so the trees read white with green showing through from underneath, and the PVC is described by the maker as flame-retardant, fade-resistant and free of any smell.

Buckets filled with cement

Each tree is planted in a galvanised metal bucket with cement set into the bottom. That is the detail that makes a one foot wide tree stand up: weight low down rather than a wide stand. It also means there is nothing to cover, no wire legs and no skirt required.

One, two and two sections

The smallest tree is a single piece; the two taller ones split into two. Stand the buckets on a level floor, drop the trunk sections in one by one, then spread the branch tips by hand. Nothing is screwed or bolted.

A descending row of three along a hallway wall or beside a door is a proper arrangement that still leaves the walkway clear. That is only possible because each tree is a foot wide.

Flocked pencils in metal buckets read as scenery rather than as competing trees. Split them between a hall, a landing and a dining room and one set decorates a whole floor.

Weighted buckets are harder to knock over than a stand, and three slim trees fill a frontage that a single tree would leave sparse.

Do they come with lights?

No. All three trees are unlit and nothing in the manufacturer's record describes a light string or an adaptor. Battery strings suit these well, since the buckets give you somewhere to tuck a battery box out of sight.

Will the flocking come off?

Some will, mostly while you are spreading the branches the first time. Lay a sheet down and vacuum once afterwards. It drops off sharply after the first season.

How stable is a one foot wide tree?

Stable for its size, because the weight is at the bottom rather than out to the sides: each bucket has cement set into its base. On a hard floor in a busy hallway they are still slim trees, so do not expect them to shrug off a knock.

Can they stand outside?

The manufacturer photographs them indoors and publishes no weather or ingress rating, so we would keep them under cover. The metal buckets would not object to a sheltered porch, but the flocking and the PVC are not described as weatherproof.

How do they go together?

Stand the buckets on a level floor, insert the trunk sections one by one and fluff the tips. The smallest tree is one piece; the two taller ones are two sections each.

Are the buckets heavy?

No overall weight is published for the set, so we cannot give you a figure. The cement is set into the base of each bucket rather than filling it, so expect them to be steady rather than immovable.
