What the lights look like on

On a dark terrace the beads read as a line of small points along each rib, with the hub light filling the middle. It is white light rather than warm. The manufacturer suggests leaving the switch off while the panel charges during the day if you want a longer run in the evening.

The arm steps through six positions, so you can drop the canopy low against late sun or raise it for headroom.

Step on the pedal at the base, hold the post and turn. The canopy goes right around without the base shifting.

LED beads follow the ribs and a brighter light sits at the hub. About 6 to 8 hours after a full day's charge.

The top is built in two layers with a gap between them, so air climbs out of the canopy rather than pushing it.

How long do the lights stay on?

About 6 to 8 hours after a full day of charging, which is the manufacturer's figure. A dull Canadian week will give you less. Leaving the lights switched off while the panel charges is their own advice for getting the most out of an evening.

What weighted base does it need?

The 40 inch cross frame comes with it; the weights do not. This SKU's dimension drawing recommends a 220 lb weighted base. Worth knowing: the other colourways of the same frame carry a 90 lb recommendation on their drawings, so the manufacturer's own paperwork is inconsistent. Sizing up to 220 lb is the safe reading of it.

How much shade does it give and how high is the rim?

A 10 foot canopy, 8.4 feet to the crown and 6.4 feet under the rim. That covers a six seat table or a sofa group, and gives enough headroom to stand near the middle. Keep the low edge away from a doorway or a path.

How should it be stored over winter?
