A five foot tree with a normal spread wants a metre of floor. In a flat, a hallway or a rented room, that metre is already carrying a radiator, a door swing or a sofa arm.

This one takes the height and drops the width: 5 ft tall inside 1.7 ft, on a 12 by 12 inch metal plate. It stands where a plant stand would, against a wall or in an alcove, and the flocked tips keep it looking like a real tree rather than a token one.

Five feet on a one foot square

The drawing gives 5 FT of height, a 1.7 FT spread and a 12 by 12 inch base plate. Published pencil tree diameters usually run 19 to 23 inches, so this sits at the narrow end. The gloves and the adapter are shown alongside.

150 lights on 334 tips

The counts are printed on the manufacturer's own graphic: 150 LEDs, 334 branch tips, white flocking over all of them. On a narrow tree the flocking earns its place twice, once for the look and once for bouncing the light back out of a shallow branch.

Warm white and colour, eleven ways

C1 is warm white, C2 is colourful, and the eleven modes cover both: combination, steady on for each colour, mixtures, slo glo, breathing, flash and in wave. The timer runs six hours on and eighteen off on every one of them.

In colour, in a corner

Standing between a fireplace and a chair, the tree takes a foot and a half of floor. Decorated with red baubles in C2 the colour runs through the whole height. The ornaments in the photograph are not included.

Is a pencil tree worth it at five feet?

It depends what you are short of. If the room has height but no floor, yes: you get a five foot tree on a one foot square base. If you have a large ornament collection, a full profile tree will carry it better.

What is the difference between C1 and C2?

C1 is warm white and C2 is colourful. Several modes exist in both, for example C1 steady on and C2 steady on, so either colour can be held or animated.

Does the timer have to be used?

No. It is one of the settings rather than the only one. When it is on, the tree runs six hours and rests eighteen, restarting at the same hour each day.

How much flocking comes off?

Some at first setup, less after that. Shape it over a sheet, handle the inner branches rather than the tips, and keep it away from damp in storage.
