How does a fibre optic tree work?

A light unit in the base feeds colour up thin plastic fibres that are pre-installed along every branch, and each fibre glows at its tip. There are no bulbs on the branches and no string anywhere, which is why the tree looks completely plain when it is off.

Can I hold it on one colour?

The manufacturer does not publish a mode list, a remote or a steady setting, so we cannot promise one. Treat it as a tree that cycles through its seven colours whenever it is switched on.

What does UL588 mean?

UL 588 is the North American safety standard for seasonal and holiday decorative products, which covers lighting of this type. The manufacturer states the plug is certified to it.

How much assembly is there?

Almost none. The fibres are pre-installed, so the tree itself needs no assembly. Only the plastic stand has to be put together, and the tree stands in it.

Is it bright enough to light a room?

No. Fibre optic light is diffuse and gentle rather than strong. It is an atmosphere tree, and it shows best in a room that is already dim.

Can I hang ornaments on it?

Small and light ones. Every bauble that covers a cluster of fibre tips removes some of the effect, which is the opposite of what happens on a bulb lit tree, so keep the decoration sparse.
