What the boards are

The platforms and condo panels are rubber wood in multiple glued layers rather than particle board with a printed film. On a tower approaching five feet the boards are doing real work, because every landing from the top perch is absorbed by whatever is under it. Layered hardwood also holds a screw thread where chipboard eventually does not, which matters on a piece that may be taken apart and moved.

One box with a view, one without

The upper condo is cut with long slots on several sides, so a cat inside it can see out and air moves through. The lower one has a curved felt hood and a single round door, which makes it darker and quieter. Giving a cat both is more useful than giving it two of either, because the choice between watching and hiding changes through the day and with who else is in the room.

Mats that lift out

Four sisal mats sit in the platforms and can be lifted straight out. That is unusual: on most towers the scratching surface is glued down, so when it shreds the whole piece looks finished. Here the mats can be taken outside and beaten, turned over, or simply pulled while a platform is wiped. They also stop a cat sliding on bare board, which is the quieter reason they are there.
