How narrow is it really?

1.4 ft at the widest branches, on a 14 inch stand. That is narrower than the 19 to 23 inches most pencil trees measure across the bottom, so it will fit a gap other slim trees will not.

What is a bullet shaped tip?

The manufacturer's term for a needle that is rounded and closed at the end rather than cut flat. It gives the foliage a slightly softer look at close range.

Will it hold ornaments?

Small and light ones. Branches on a pencil tree are short and close to the trunk, so heavy glass hangs awkwardly and pulls the branch down.

Why does the stand have screws?

To fix the trunk rather than just hold it. On a tall narrow tree the stand carries all the leverage, and three screws stop the trunk shifting in the socket.
