The standard six foot tree spreads three to four feet across. In a condo or a small living room that is the difference between a tree and a walkway, and it is why a lot of people settle for a tabletop tree instead.

This one holds six feet of height inside a two foot width on a 12 inch square plate. It stands against a wall, in a bay or beside a doorway, and the 250 LEDs on 407 flocked tips carry the whole height rather than just the front.

The counts are on the manufacturer's own graphic: 250 LEDs and 407 branch tips, all flocked. A hundred more bulbs than the five foot version, which is what it takes to keep the density of light the same over the extra height.

Two colours, eleven modes, one timer

C1 is warm white and C2 is colourful, and the eleven modes cover both: combination, steady on, mixture, slo glo, breathing, flash and in wave. Every mode carries the same six hours on, eighteen hours off timer.

Dressed with red baubles and lit in C2, it reads as a full tree from the doorway. Ornaments sit close to the trunk on a pencil tree, so lighter pieces and a larger number of them work better than a few heavy ones.

Will a two foot wide tree look odd at six feet?

It looks tall and narrow, which is the point. Against a wall or in an alcove it reads as elegant. In the middle of a large room it can look stranded, so position matters more than with a full tree.

How many ornaments will it take?

Fewer and lighter than a full tree of the same height. Branches on a pencil tree are short and close to the trunk, so a lot of small pieces works better than a few large ones.

Is the base big enough to be stable?

It is a 12 by 12 inch steel plate, which is what the manufacturer supplies for this height. Keep it clear of a doorway where it could be knocked, and it will stand.

What happens at the end of the timer cycle?

It switches off for eighteen hours and comes back on at the same hour the next day, in whichever mode it was left in.
