Is the grey unit any different inside?

No. The capacity, modes, noise rating and accessories match the white version of the same model. Only the cabinet finish changes.

What does auto shut off when the tank is full mean in practice?

Condensate collects inside the unit. When it reaches the limit the machine stops cooling and signals instead of letting water escape. Connect the supplied 25.5 inch drain hose to the drainage hole and the water leaves continuously, so it never gets to that point.

Which BTU figure should I use for sizing?

The SACC figure, 5,300 BTU, and the 230 sq ft coverage that goes with it. ASHRAE 8,000 BTU is a fixed laboratory measurement and Danby notes it is generally the higher of the two numbers for the same unit.

Can I use it without venting the hose out a window?

No. The hose carries away the heat the unit has taken out of the room plus the heat the compressor makes. Venting it indoors leaves the room warmer than it started.
