What does overflow protection actually do?

Condensate collects inside the unit. When the internal tray reaches its limit the machine stops cooling and warns you instead of letting water escape. Connecting the supplied 2.1 ft drain hose to the port avoids the situation entirely, since the water leaves continuously under gravity.

Does it need draining every day?

Only in humid weather, and only if you are not using the drain hose. In dry indoor air a portable unit can go a long time producing very little. In sticky conditions a unit in this class can pull several pints an hour, so the hose is worth fitting from the start.

Why two different BTU numbers?

ASHRAE 8,000 is the fixed laboratory rating and SACC 5,000 is the seasonally adjusted one. Danby notes the SACC figure is generally lower for the same machine because it reflects real cooling season conditions. Use the SACC number for sizing.

Will the window kit suit a crank out window?

No. It adjusts from 25.5 to 47 inches and seals against sliding windows. Casement and crank out windows need a panel cut for the exact opening, because a sliding kit cannot seal that frame properly.
