How big a room will this really handle?

The maker quotes 350 sq ft, tied to the 6,000 BTU SACC rating rather than the 10,000 BTU ASHRAE figure. A room with large west facing glass, a nine foot ceiling or poor insulation will feel smaller than its floor area suggests, so treat 350 sq ft as the ceiling.

Does the exhaust hose have to go out a window?

It has to reach outside somehow. The hose carries away both the heat pulled from the room and the heat the compressor makes, so venting it indoors warms the room instead of cooling it. A sliding patio door track can work if the opening falls between 25.5 and 47 inches.

Can I leave it running while I am out?

Yes, and the 24 hour timer is designed for it. Fit the drain hose first so the unit does not stop on a full tray while you are away, and make sure the window seal is snug.

What is the noise level?

55 dB or under by the manufacturer's rating. Normal conversation is around 60 dB, so it is present but not loud. Low fan speed and sleep mode both bring it down.
