Three settings and when each one earns its place

Auto holds whatever level you set between 30% and 80% and idles in between, which is how a living room should be run. Continuous drying ignores the target and simply runs, which is the mode for a rack of wet clothes or a room that has just been wet. Sleep quietens it for the night. Each of those pairs with a high or a low fan speed.

The tank is a fallback, not the plan

At 0.5 gallons the tank is fine for a bedroom where the machine idles most of the day, and the unit shuts itself off rather than overflowing when it fills. Anywhere damper, push on the 3.3 ft pipe supplied and let gravity take the water to a floor drain. The pipe is in the box, so switching approach costs nothing.

What sleep mode actually changes

Two things, and both matter in a small room. The fan drops to low for a published 33 dB, and the panel lights switch off rather than dimming. The 24 hour timer sits alongside, so it can stop at a set hour instead of running through to morning.

Which mode should I leave it on?

Auto for most of the time. It holds the level you set between 30% and 80% and idles once it gets there, which is cheaper to run and quieter than the alternatives. Use continuous drying only when you are actively drying something, such as a laundry rack or a room after a leak, and sleep mode overnight.

Why is the DOE number only 9 pints?

Because it is measured in much cooler, drier air. The 32 pint figure is at 95F and 90% relative humidity, and the 2019 DOE standard is at 65F and 60%, which the US Department of Energy chose because it reflects a basement. Every brand's rating falls by roughly the same proportion on that test, so use DOE figures to compare and treat the 95F number as a ceiling.

Does the filter need replacing?

No. It is removable and washable, so it slides out of the back panel and rinses under a tap. Let it dry before it goes back. There is no cartridge to reorder, and keeping it clean is the single thing that most affects how well the machine works.

Is a normal wall outlet enough?

Yes. The specification is 115V, 60Hz drawing 155W on a 5.9 ft cable, which is a light load on an ordinary grounded Canadian household outlet. Plug it into the wall rather than a light duty extension cord.
