The footboard of this bed is built as open shelving that faces into the room. Books stand upright at the end of the bed, in reach from the mattress and out of the way of the door.

Eighty seven and a half inches of wall

The mattress inside is 75 by 54 inches, a plain Double. The bed around it is 87.5 inches long and 56 inches wide, because the headboard shelving and the footboard shelving each add depth. The headboard tops out at 39 inches and the footboard at 16. Those two numbers decide whether it fits under a window and whether it blocks a radiator at the foot.

A hundred degrees, and padding behind it

The panel leans back at 100 degrees, which is ten degrees off vertical. Combined with the sponge padding and a linen cover, it is a headboard you can actually sit against for an hour rather than a board you put a pillow in front of.

Ten slats, four extra feet

Ten plywood slats across the deck and four additional solid wood feet under the middle of it. The four feet are what the manufacturer points at when it says the platform will not sink, and they are why no box spring is needed.

Books at the foot of the bed

The footboard shelving faces out, so it works as a low bookcase for the room rather than as a ledge for the sleeper. In a child's room it puts the bedtime books where a child can reach them without getting out of bed onto a cold floor.
