14000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Heat, App and WiFi Control

This one heats as well as cools: 14,000 BTU of cooling and 10,000 BTU of heating from the same cabinet, which covers the shoulder seasons a cooling only unit sits out. Rated 8,800 BTU SACC over 700 sq ft, with 430 cubic metres an hour of air flow and a 66 pint a day dry mode.

The room that is cold in May and hot in July

What usually goes wrong

A converted attic, a garage office or a room over an unheated space swings both ways. The furnace is off by May and the room is chilly in the morning, then unbearable by August. Two appliances get bought, and one of them is always in the way.

How this one answers it

Five modes in one cabinet: cool, heat, fan, dry and sleep. Cooling is rated 14,000 BTU and heating 10,000 BTU, both set between 60.8 and 89.6 F, so the same machine covers the room from April through to October.

Heating on a portable air conditioner is not a furnace replacement. It is a way of taking the chill off a room in spring and autumn without turning the whole house heating on, and on this unit it is rated at 10,000 BTU.

Everything it is rated to do, in one panel

14,000 BTU of cooling, 10,000 BTU of heating, 700 sq ft of recommended cooling area, 430 cubic metres an hour of air flow and 66 pints a day of dehumidification. The seasonally adjusted cooling rating is 8,800 BTU, which is the figure to size a room from.

Five modes and three speeds on one strip

Cool, heat, fan, dry and sleep, with high, medium and low fan speeds. The wifi symbol sits on the panel itself, so you can see at a glance whether it is connected. The free Smart Life app covers Android and iOS.

Six protections, and one you will be glad of

Auto defrost, overload protection, tank full cut-off, a self-evaporating system, manual or continuous drainage, and auto restart after a power cut. That last one matters if you run it while you are out: after a summer storm it picks up where it left off rather than sitting dark.

Fitting it, and using the heat

The kit covers openings from 25.5 to 47 inches on hung or sliding windows. The heating function shares the same 60.8 to 89.6 F set range as cooling, so switching between them in the shoulder season is one button rather than a new setup.

What you get

Cooling and heating in one cabinet

14,000 BTU of cooling and 10,000 BTU of heating, both across a 60.8 to 89.6 F set range.

8,800 BTU SACC over 700 sq ft

The seasonally adjusted rating and the coverage the manufacturer quotes against it.

Wifi through the Smart Life app

A free app for Android and iOS, with the connection status shown on the panel itself.

Self-evaporating system

Most condensate leaves as vapour through the exhaust hose, with manual or continuous drainage behind it.

Auto restart after a power cut

Picks up its previous settings when the power returns, which matters if it runs while you are out.

70 degree oscillation

Spreads air across the room rather than aiming it at one seat.

ETL and DOE listed

Both marks appear on the manufacturer's own artwork for this model, with overload protection.

115V, 60Hz

A standard Canadian household socket. No electrician and no dedicated circuit.

Who is this perfect for?

Rooms that are cold in spring and hot in summer

Converted attics, garage offices and rooms over unheated space swing both ways. One cabinet covers both ends of the year instead of two appliances.

Larger rooms up to about 700 sq ft

The recommended cooling area, quoted against an 8,800 BTU SACC rating with 430 cubic metres an hour of air flow behind it.

Anyone who runs it while they are out

It restores its own settings after a power cut rather than staying off until somebody presses a button.

Girl and a puppy on a floor beside the running unit, with ETL and DOE badges and a list of auto defrosting, overload protection, auto shut off when the tank is full, self-evaporating system, auto restart after a power cut and manual or continuous drainage

Frequently asked questions

Will the heating replace my furnace?

No. It is rated at 10,000 BTU of heating for a single room, which is enough to take the chill off a converted attic or a garage office in spring and autumn. It is not a whole house heating system and it is not designed for the depth of a Canadian winter.

Does it plug into a normal outlet?

Yes. Both the store record and the manufacturer's own specification give the power supply as 115V at 60Hz, which is a standard Canadian household socket. Give it a dedicated outlet rather than sharing a circuit with other heavy appliances.

Which cooling figure should I size my room from?

The SACC rating of 8,800 BTU. ASHRAE 14,000 BTU is measured under fixed laboratory conditions, and Danby notes SACC comes out lower for the same machine because it reflects real cooling season temperature and humidity. The 700 sq ft figure is the maker's recommendation against the SACC number.

Will it need draining?

Usually not in cooling mode. The self-evaporating system carries most condensate out as vapour through the exhaust hose, and the unit stops itself if the tank does fill. A 25.5 inch drainage hose is supplied for continuous drainage in humid weather.
