A pre-lit tree commits you to a light colour for as long as you own it. Warm white for a decade, or multicolour for a decade, decided in a shop in October and regretted by the second week of December.

These bulbs are RGB, so the colour is software rather than hardware. Warm white on a quiet evening, deep blue for a party, nine classic monochromes, four scenario palettes or a random colourful spread, all chosen from a phone or a remote and changed as often as you like.

Six feet two on a 2.6 foot spread and an 18 inch stand, with a 6.6 ft power cord. That is slim for the height without being a bare pencil, so it still reads as a tree rather than a column. A pair of gloves is included for shaping the tips.

The app, and what it actually does

Four scenario colour modes, nine classic monochromes, a warm and cool white toggle, a colourful random distribution, nine dynamic modes, a rotation mode and four rhythmic ones, with ten levels of brightness, speed and sensitivity and a timer. The app is called Surplife and is on both the App Store and Google Play.

220 RGB bulbs, any colour

The manufacturer's own grid of colour states is the clearest demonstration: the same tree in warm gold, in green, in blue, in violet. RGB means the colour is not fixed in the bulb, which is what separates this from a tree sold as warm white or as multicolour.

Hinged sections, folding stand

The branches are attached and hinged, so each section opens with its branches already swinging into place. The folding metal stand has protective foot pads, and the whole thing comes apart the same way it went together at the end of the season.

Warm white against multicolour is normally a decision made once and lived with. Here it is a decision made nightly, and both parties get their way.

2.6 feet of spread at over six feet tall fits where a full tree would sit out into the room, and the 6.6 ft cord gives some freedom about which corner it goes in.

Music sync, a carousel, a smear function and sixteen million colours is a lot of tree for one December. If none of that appeals, a fixed warm white tree will make you happier for less money.

Do I need a phone to use it?

No. A remote and a light controller are both included and cover the scenario colours, monochromes, dynamic and rhythmic modes, brightness, speed and the timer. The app adds custom colours, the carousel and smear functions and music sync.

What is RGB and why does it matter?

Each bulb contains red, green and blue elements that mix to make any colour. A conventional pre-lit tree has bulbs of one fixed colour, so what you buy is what you have. Here the colour is a setting rather than a property of the bulb.

How does music sync work?

The manufacturer lists music and microphone modes, which make the lights change in time with sound, with ten levels of sensitivity. It does not publish how the audio reaches the tree, so we describe the feature rather than the method.

What are the timer options?

Six hours, eight hours, or a split cycle of six hours on, six off, three on and nine off, repeating daily.

What app is it, and does it need an account?

Surplife, on the App Store and Google Play. The manufacturer does not state whether an account is required or which phone versions are supported, so we do not claim either. Ask us and we will check with the supplier before you order.

How long is the cord?

6.6 ft from the tree to the plug, which decides how far from an outlet it can stand.

Can I replace a bulb?

The string is factory-wired into the branches and no spare bulb or fuse specification is published, so we cannot promise individual bulb replacement. LED strings of this type are normally wired so one failed bulb does not darken the rest.
