Does it plug into a normal outlet?

Yes. The manufacturer specifies 115V at 60Hz drawing 6.9 A, which is an ordinary Canadian wall socket on a standard circuit. The cord is 6 ft, so plan the position with that in mind rather than reaching for an extension lead.

What window openings does the kit cover?

37.5 to 49 inches, on horizontal sliding windows or single and double hung windows. That is wider than most kits in this category, so a small window may fall below the minimum. Crank out casement windows need a panel made to the opening.

Is 350 sq ft realistic for 8,000 BTU?

It is the maker's own coverage figure, quoted against the 5,000 BTU SACC rating, and it sits at the optimistic end for this capacity. A well insulated room without much afternoon glass will get closer to it than a sunny one.

How does the light off function work?

It darkens the display while the machine keeps running, so there are no lit digits glowing next to a bed. It is a separate control rather than something tied to sleep mode.
