10000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Dehumidifier and Fan Mode, Cools up to 350 sq ft
Description
10000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Dehumidifier and Fan Mode
Rated 10,000 BTU on the ASHRAE scale and 6,000 BTU on the seasonally adjusted SACC scale, matched by the maker to about 350 sq ft. Air flow is 194 CFM and dry mode is rated at 51 pints a day, on a single 115V household plug.
The step up from an 8,000 BTU unit is not really about temperature. It is about how big a room the machine can keep up with once the sun has been on the windows all afternoon.

Controls that do not need a manual
Eight labelled keys sit on the top panel: power, mode, speed, timer, sleep, child lock and the two temperature arrows. The remote repeats them from up to 16.5 ft, far enough to reach across a living room without standing up.
The five minute part of the job
Slide the kit into the opening, clip the adapter on, push the 5.2 ft hose into place and close the sash. It suits sliding windows from 25.5 to 47 inches, either kind. Crank out casement windows need a panel made to the opening instead.

Set the water free and forget it
51 pints a day is the rated dry mode figure, and on a humid week that is real water. Push the supplied hose onto the rear port and route it to a floor drain or a low tray, and the unit empties itself while it runs.
What you get
10,000 BTU ASHRAE, 6,000 BTU SACC
Two ratings for one machine. The SACC figure is the seasonally adjusted one, so use it when matching the unit to a room.
194 CFM of air flow
More air moved per minute than the 8,000 BTU units in this range, which is what carries cold air across a larger room.
Dry mode at 51 pints a day
Runs the compressor for moisture rather than temperature, useful on a warm damp day in June.
Child lock and water full cut-off
The panel locks against small hands, and the unit stops before the internal tray can overflow.
Four castors and side handles
49.5 lb on wheels, with recessed grips moulded into both sides.
Ordinary wall socket
115V, 60Hz at 7.8 A on a 5.9 ft cord. No special circuit is needed.

How it compares
Three ways to cool a 350 sq ft room, compared on the things people actually notice.
| This portable unit | A window air conditioner | Central air conditioning | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it takes to fit | Slide the kit into the opening | Lift it into the frame and seal it | Ductwork and a licensed trade |
| Window usable again in autumn | Yes, the kit lifts out | Only once it is taken down | Not applicable |
| Cools other rooms too | No, one room at a time | No | Yes, the whole house |
| Dehumidifies on its own | Yes, dry mode | Usually yes | Only while cooling |
| Up front cost | Lowest of the three | Similar | Much higher |
| Can be taken to a new home | Yes | Usually | No |

Who is this perfect for?
Living rooms and larger bedrooms
350 sq ft is the maker's coverage figure, which puts a normal Canadian living room within reach.
Damp summers on the coast or the lakes
51 pints a day in dry mode is a serious amount of water for a machine this size.
Homes without ductwork
Older houses and finished basements often have nowhere to run a duct. This needs a window and a socket.

Frequently asked questions
Which BTU number should I size my room from?
The SACC figure, 6,000 BTU. It is the seasonally adjusted rating and it accounts for the temperature and humidity a machine really meets, which is why Danby notes it comes out lower than the ASHRAE number for the same unit. The 350 sq ft coverage quoted by the maker is tied to it.
Does it need emptying by hand?
Not if you use the drain hose. There is a port on the back for the supplied 2.1 ft hose, which lets condensate run out continuously. How much water appears depends on the humidity, and in sticky weather a unit of this size can produce a few pints an hour.
What window will the kit fit?
Sliding windows with an opening between 25.5 and 47 inches, either the up and down or the side to side kind. Casement or crank out windows need a custom cut panel, because a generic sliding kit will not seal against that frame.
Is a single hose unit less efficient than a dual hose one?
It works a little harder. A single hose draws its exhaust air from inside the room, which lowers the indoor pressure slightly and pulls warm air back in around doors and gaps. GE Appliances describes exactly that effect. Sealing the window kit well is the practical fix.
