Green foliage absorbs most of what a coloured bulb throws at it. The result is points of colour against a dark tree, which is why multicolour strings on a conventional tree read as decoration rather than as a change of mood.

White coral shaped branches reflect rather than absorb, so when the RGB bulbs turn red, the tree turns red. The manufacturer's own photographs show it running through nine or ten distinct colours, and the whole shape changes with each one.

Seven feet, three and a half across

7 ft of height on a 3.5 ft spread and a 22 inch stand. That is narrow for seven feet, which suits the open branch structure: this tree is meant to be seen through rather than filled in. Two pairs of gloves are included.

Why coral shaped branches

820 tips, each moulded as a flat coral frond rather than a cluster of needles. The shape spreads light sideways instead of trapping it, which is the reason the colour reaches the whole branch rather than staying at the bulb.

Seventeen effects, and what they look like

The ten small panels are the same tree photographed in different colours. The lights switch between plain white and full RGB, and the 17 effects cover solid colours, fades and combinations. It is a genuine change of scene rather than a blink setting.

Can it be plain white instead of colour?

Yes. The lights switch between white and multicolour, so it can run as a conventional white lit tree and change only when you want it to.

What are the 17 lighting effects?

The manufacturer does not publish a full named list, so we do not print one. Its own photography shows solid colours, fades and combination effects across the range.

How far does the remote work from?

32.8 ft, which the manufacturer also states as 10 m. That covers most rooms from a sofa.

How does the timer work?

Six hours on and eighteen hours off. Switch it on at the hour you want it lit and it returns at the same time each day.

Does it need fluffing?

Less than a needle tree. The branches are hinged and the coral fronds are moulded flat, so there are no tips to bend back into shape, only branches to space out.
