A plain green tree arrives and then the real spending starts: lights, then picks, then cones, then berry sprays, then something to hide the gaps. Most of it gets stuffed back in a box in January and half of it is missing by next year.

This one arrives with 350 lights, 40 pine cones and 40 red berry clusters fitted among the branches, plus snow spraying on two of the three leaf types. Add baubles if you want them, but the tree is finished without any.

What is fixed to the branches

The inset shows a cone and a berry cluster sitting in the foliage the way they would on a real branch, not clipped on top of it. The count is exact: 1072 tips, 40 cones, 40 berry clusters, 350 lights. Because they are wired in rather than hung, nothing shifts or falls off while you are decorating around them.

Three leaves, three jobs

Coarse PET needles run across the top of the panel, stiff and twisted with an iridescent sheen that catches light. Underneath, snow sprayed PE leaves keep a moulded needle shape and snow sprayed PVC leaves pack the tree out. Three textures on one branch is what stops the foliage looking stamped from a single mould.

Seven feet, and a long enough cord

Seven feet tall, 3.8 feet across, on a 22 inch stand. The detail worth noting is the cord: 9.5 feet, which is long enough to reach a wall outlet from the middle of a room without an extension lead trailing across the carpet. A UL certified adapter and one pair of gloves come with it.

Eight settings on a small green box

Combination, in wave, sequential, slo glo, chasing or flash, slow fade, twinkle or flash, and steady on. The controller is the green box shown at the left, sitting inline on the cord. One of the eight is static and the other seven move, so the tree can be quiet on a normal evening and busy on the night you want it.

Wired into the branches at the factory, spread through the tree rather than clustered at the front.

Are the cones and berries fixed or can they be moved?

They are wired into the branches at the factory and spread through the tree, so they stay where they are while you decorate around them. The manufacturer counts 40 pine cones and 40 clusters of red berries on this size.

Is it flocked or sprayed?

Sprayed. The manufacturer describes snow sprayed PE and PVC leaves rather than a heavy flock coat, so the effect is a frosting on the needle edges instead of a thick white layer. It sheds less than a heavily flocked tree for the same reason.

How long is the power cord?

Nine and a half feet, stated on the manufacturer's dimension drawing. That is longer than most, and it is the difference between plugging straight into a wall socket and running an extension lead across a room.

What do the eight modes do?

One is steady on. The other seven move: combination, in wave, sequential, slo glo, chasing or flash, slow fade and twinkle or flash. They are changed with a small inline controller on the cord near the plug.
