This one syncs to music. The 230 RGB light balls pick up sound through the controller and change with it, across four rhythmic modes and a sensitivity setting. Away from music there are 42 effects, nine classic monochromes, a rotation mode and a timer, run from a remote, a controller or a phone app.

A fixed string is the same every night

Most pre-lit trees give you warm white, maybe a flash mode, and that is the whole range for the life of the tree. By the second week of December nobody looks at it any more.

Colour, rhythm and a phone

230 RGB balls cover 16 million colours according to the manufacturer, with 42 effects, nine monochromes, a rotation mode and four rhythmic modes that follow music. Set it from the remote, the controller or the app, and it is a different tree each evening.

A smart tree is worth it only if the controls are actually usable. This one has three of them, which is unusual, and all the settings are published rather than hinted at.

The app, and what it adds

The app is Surplife, on both major app stores according to the manufacturer, and it is the route to the full colour range. The remote and the controller cover the presets, so the phone is an addition rather than a requirement.

The tree under the lights

936 branch tips in two materials: moulded PE needles for the outside and PVC for the fill. On a tree bought for its lighting it would be easy to skimp here, and the tip count says they have not.

How does the music sync work?

The controller picks up sound and the lights change with it, across four rhythmic modes with a ten level sensitivity setting so it can be tuned to the room volume. No microphone specification is published beyond that.

Do I need the app?
