32 Pint Dehumidifier for 1750 Sq Ft, 9 Pints DOE, 38 dB, 3 Colour Humidity Light, Auto Defrost, White

Auto mode on this one works to a narrow 3% band: it starts when the room reads 3% above your setting and stops when it reads 3% below, so the humidity stays steady instead of swinging. The manufacturer publishes three capacity figures, 32 pints a day at 95F and 90% RH, 25 at 86F and 80%, and 9 on the DOE test.

Humidity that swings is worse than humidity that is slightly high

What usually goes wrong

Cheap machines run until the room is bone dry, stop, and then wait until it is uncomfortable again before restarting. The average looks fine on paper, but the walls and the woodwork see the swing, and the compressor wears out doing it.

How this one answers it

Auto mode uses a 3% band either side of what you set. It restarts when the reading is 3% above your target and stops when it is 3% below. The result is a far flatter line, and fewer full starts for the compressor.

A mid sized room machine: 10 by 8.5 by 17.5 inches, 22.5 lbs, four casters and a moulded handle. It draws 172W.

Two views of the white dehumidifier with dimension arrows reading 10 inches wide, 8.5 inches deep and 17.5 inches tall, above a blue table listing 25 pints per day at 86F and 80% RH, 9 pints per day on the DOE standard and 32 pints per day at 95F and 90% RH

The capacity table is the honest part of this listing

Three conditions, three very different answers. 32 pints a day is measured in hot, saturated air at 95F and 90% RH. 25 pints is at 86F and 80%. Nine pints is the 2019 DOE test at 65F and 60%, which is the condition the US Department of Energy picked because it matches a real basement. When you compare this against another brand, line up the DOE figures.

What the auto mode is actually doing

The curve explains the control logic most listings never mention. The compressor starts once the room drifts 3% above your setting and stops 3% below it. A tight band like that keeps a basement level rather than letting it bounce. Auto defrost sits underneath, clearing frost off the coil when the room is cool so the airflow does not choke.

Where 38 dB actually sits

The comparison on this photo is the useful way to think about it. At 38 dB the machine is quieter than an office and well below street noise, though not as quiet as a library. It is the level you can leave running beside a sofa or in a bedroom. Sleeping mode drops the fan and the 24 hour timer can shut it off at a set hour.

What you get

Three modes and two fan speeds

Auto holds your target, continuous drying runs flat out for a laundry rack, and sleeping mode keeps the noise down overnight. High and low wind speeds sit under all three.

Three colour humidity light

Blue under 45%, green between 45% and 65%, red above 65%. You read the state of the room from across it.

Auto defrost

Clears frost off the coil in a cool room instead of letting it build up and block the airflow.

Tank or hose

A 0.5 gallon (2 L) tank with a full water alarm and auto shutoff, or the supplied 3.3 ft hose for continuous gravity drainage.

Child lock

Locks the touch panel, which matters on a machine that sits at toddler height in a living room.

Washable filter screen

Detachable and washable, so there is no cartridge to reorder and no cost beyond a rinse under the tap.

Four casters and a moulded handle

22.5 lbs on 360 degree casters. It rolls between rooms and lifts into a car without help.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same machine say 32 pints and 9 pints?

Because they are measured in different air. 32 pints a day is at 95F and 90% relative humidity, 25 pints at 86F and 80%, and 9 pints on the 2019 DOE test at 65F and 60%. The US Department of Energy moved to that cooler condition because it reflects a basement rather than a tropical afternoon. ENERGY STAR publishes a guide showing the same drop across the whole industry. Compare DOE to DOE.

What should I set it to?

Health Canada advises keeping a home between 30% and 50% relative humidity, and running a dehumidifier in damp areas such as basements or when moisture condenses on cold surfaces like window panes. Somewhere around 45% to 50% is a good starting point. The colour light turns green in the comfortable band.

How often will I empty the tank?

It depends entirely on how damp the room is. The tank holds 0.5 gallons, which a genuinely wet basement will fill in well under a day, and a mildly damp bedroom might take several days to fill. The machine stops and sounds an alarm when it is full. If it is filling faster than you want to empty it, fit the 3.3 ft hose and let it drain continuously.

Will it work in a cold basement?

It is a compressor machine, so it works best above about 10C and is at its strongest above 15C. Auto defrost handles the frost that forms at the cool end. If the space regularly sits close to freezing, a desiccant dehumidifier is the correct type.
