What usually goes wrong
A small dehumidifier in a big unfinished basement pulls water out of the air three feet in front of it and never reaches the far wall. The meter next to the machine reads fine. The boxes at the other end still feel soft.

What does 205 CFM actually change?
It changes how much of the room the machine can reach. A dehumidifier only removes water from air that passes over its cold coil, so the fan matters as much as the compressor. In a 1,800 sq ft basement a high airflow unit keeps the whole volume circulating, while a small household fan dries its own corner. If your space is one room, airflow matters less and a smaller machine will do.
Why does it say 140 pints in the title and 50 pints in the specifications?
Those are the same machine at two test conditions. The 140 pint figure is measured at 95F and 90% relative humidity. The 50 pint figure is the 2019 DOE test, which the US Department of Energy set at a cooler 65F and 60% because that is closer to a real basement. Compare DOE figures when you are choosing between brands, since the hot weather number flatters every machine equally.
Can it run in an unheated garage over winter?
The manufacturer gives an operating range of 41F to 89.6F. Below that, a compressor machine spends more of its time defrosting than removing water. For a space that regularly drops toward freezing, a desiccant dehumidifier is the correct type.
How do I turn the pump on?
