What base does it need?

The 40 inch cross frame is included; the weights are not. The record gives two different numbers for what to add: the description text asks for 140 lb (64 kg) and this product's own dimension drawing asks for 220 lb. The manufacturer's paperwork disagrees with itself, and the higher figure is the safe one to work to, because the whole canopy hangs off one side of the post.

How does it open without a crank?

On a trigger handle. You squeeze the trigger to release the runner and lift the canopy by hand, then let the trigger lock it. Fewer moving parts than a crank, and nothing geared to strip, at the cost of a little more effort on a canopy this size.

What is the winter routine?
