Is 39.5 inches too deep for normal sitting?

On its own, yes. That is what the five pillows are for. Stacked against the back they bring the usable depth down to something ordinary for sitting upright, and taken away you get the full surface to lie on.

Does the whole thing really seat four?

Four is the maker's figure, and the 84.5 inch seat surface supports it for casual sitting. It is not four upright dining style places, because there are no seat divisions at all, which is also why it takes five people quite happily when nobody minds touching.

What is the sofa actually made of?

Soft sponge cushions in corduroy covers, with no internal timber or steel frame and no legs. That is why there is nothing to assemble, and also why the sponge needs three days to reach full size after being vacuum packed.

Will it fit through my front door?
