Green Wall Mounted Cat Shelf Set with Hammock, Bed and Five Levels

Every panel here is rated for 33 pounds, but that rating assumes the fixings behind it hold. A screw into plasterboard with nothing behind it will not, and a cat landing on a shelf loads it far harder than a cat sitting on one.

Studs in most homes sit 16 inches apart centre to centre, sometimes 24. Find them with a detector, plan the panel positions so the main fixings land in timber, and use heavy duty plasterboard anchors only where a stud cannot be reached. A marking pen is supplied for transferring the panel hole positions to the wall before drilling.

Where it lands on the wall

Set as drawn, the top of the piece is 71 inches from the floor and it spans 68 inches across. The bed panel is 29 by 16 inches at 50 inches, the upper left platform 23 by 14.5 at 56.5, and two lower platforms of 16 by 19.5 and 16 by 17.5 sit at 25.5 and 21 inches. Thirty three pounds is published for each layer. Those two lower platforms are the ones that decide whether a cat can get onto the set at all, so measure them against the furniture already standing there.

A hammock you can drop into

The hammock hangs under the main panel and an 8 inch hole is cut through the board above it. A cat on the platform above can go straight down into the sling rather than climbing round the outside of the set, and it can come back up the same way. On a wall system, where there is no trunk to shin up, that hole is the difference between five separate shelves and one route.

Five cushions, all removable

Each padded level takes a sponge filled cushion in polyester peach skin fabric, and every one lifts off. That matters more on a wall set than on a floor tower: the panels themselves are bolted to the wall and are not coming down for cleaning, so anything that needs washing has to be the part that detaches.

A post on a wall

A sisal wrapped post projects horizontally from the main panel and two large sisal mats are fixed flat to it. The mats are the part that matters here, because a cat climbing a wall set naturally reaches for the vertical surface in front of it, and a bare plywood face gives it nothing.
