Four dens, four doorways
The top opening is about 6.5 inches, the two middle tiers around 9 by 8, and the trunk at the bottom roughly 9.5 by 9. Tier widths run 15.5, 16 and 20 inches on a base 24 across. The openings grow as they go down, which suits the way cats sort themselves by size.
Every tier is a den
There is no open platform on this one. All four levels are hollow with a doorway each, so a cat is always inside something. In a household of three or four that means separate rooms rather than a queue for the single enclosed box.
A carpet on the trunk
A flat scratching carpet is fixed to the front of the trunk at the base. A cat leaning into a panel gets more of its weight behind the scratch than it does hugging a column, and putting it at the entrance to the lowest den means it is passed constantly.
