This column is not free standing. Both posts wind up against the ceiling under tension, and an anti tipping cable is supplied to tie the frame back to the wall as well.

How it holds itself up

A screw at the head of each column winds out about twelve and a half inches until the top pads bear on the ceiling. The range runs from 93 inches to roughly 105, so the first job is measuring the ceiling at the spot the tower will stand rather than at the doorway, where the two are often half an inch apart.

The cable in the box

An anti tipping cable comes with the tower to tie it back to the wall. Tension against a ceiling holds a column steady in ordinary use. The strap covers the other day, the one where a cat launches at the top platform from the top of a bookcase, and it takes five minutes to fit.
