Do I need a phone to use it?

No. The remote covers the automatic cycle, four timers, ten brightness levels, ten speed levels, eight dynamic modes and the 22 effects, and there is a button on the inline controller as well. The app adds the full colour picker, the smear blend, saved scenes and music sync.

How does music sync work?

Two modes. Music mode follows the audio, and mic mode listens to the room through the phone. In both, the lights move in time with what they hear.
