In a small bedroom the bed takes the only long wall. A bedside table then has to squeeze into a corner or go without, and the books and the lamp end up on the floor.

It is a wall, not a bed

This is the measurement that surprises people. The headboard and the two nightstands together run 73.5 inches across, which is more than six feet of wall, and the whole assembly is 87 inches from the back of the shelving to the foot of the bed. The sleeping platform itself is only 41.5 inches wide and sits 14 inches off the floor. Measure the wall first and the mattress second.

Shelves that move, and one that hides

Seven compartments sit above and beside the pillow. Two of the shelves adjust through four positions in 2.5 inch steps, so a row of hardback books and a row of board games can share the same headboard. Behind the flip down door in the centre there is a closed compartment with magnetic catches and metal hinges, which is the part that gets used for the things that should not sit on an open shelf.

Two nightstands you cannot knock over

The nightstands are part of the unit rather than separate boxes pushed against it. Between them there are three drawers and a cubby. In a child's room that matters twice over: nothing tips when it is climbed on, and there is no gap behind a loose nightstand for socks to disappear into.

Ten slats and a 6 inch mattress

Ten plywood slats carry the mattress with no box spring under it. The published platform capacity is 330 lb. The manufacturer's recommended mattress thickness here is 6 inches, which is thinner than usual, because a deep mattress would lift the sleeper up past the useful shelves in the headboard.
